Xiao Heng was momentarily stunned.

Long Yi, seeing his young master frozen in place, also stopped in his tracks, his expression mirroring Xiao Heng’s so precisely that even the way he opened his mouth was identical.

Xiao Heng blinked in confusion, then slowly raised his hand.

He closed the door. Then, he pulled it open again.

Long Yi was still there. This was not a dream. Long Yi had truly come.

"Long—"

Bang!

Before Xiao Heng could finish speaking, Long Yi abruptly pulled the door shut. A moment later, he pushed it open again.

Xiao Heng was caught between laughter and tears.

He was already twenty years old, no longer the little troublemaker who used to clamor for Long Yi to play with him every day.

Yet, while everyone else had changed, Long Yi remained the same.

A sudden wave of emotion welled up in Xiao Heng’s chest, a faint sting at the tip of his nose.

To him, Long Yi was not a bodyguard, not a servant. He was family, just like Princess Xinyang. He had been there throughout Xiao Heng’s hazy early years and his mischievous childhood.

Never once had he been angry with him. Never once had he been disappointed in him.

"Long Yi…"

His voice nearly choked with emotion.

But before he could let the moment fully sink in and shed a tear, Long Yi suddenly scooped him up in one swift motion.

The world spun around Xiao Heng as his tears were forcefully pushed back.

Without a word—mainly because he wasn’t capable of speaking—Long Yi carried Xiao Heng into an empty room.

"This is Gu Chengfeng’s room." Xiao Heng said, still hanging upside down.

Long Yi turned and went to the next room.

"This is the Emperor’s room." Xiao Heng informed him again.

Long Yi kept walking and arrived at the third empty room.

This was Gu Jiao’s room.

Xiao Heng immediately shut his mouth.

Alright, go ahead, throw me onto JiaoJiao’s bed!

Long Yi turned and left.

Xiao Heng: "…"

Eventually, Long Yi found Xiao Heng’s own room. After all, it was the only empty one left.

Without the slightest hesitation, he swiftly stripped Xiao Heng of his outer robe in just a few efficient movements, leaving him in only his inner garments. Then, with zero mercy, he flung him straight into the bed’s mosquito netting.

Xiao Heng propped himself up slightly. "Long Yi, I—"

Long Yi clapped a firm hand over his face and pressed him back down onto the pillow.

It was his young master’s bedtime.

……

By the time Gu Jiao returned to Maple Courtyard, the oil lamp in Xiao Heng’s room had already been extinguished. Long Yi, still clutching his long sword, was perched on the roof beam, leaning against a pillar, fast asleep.

This was a habit Long Yi had developed over years of guarding Princess Xinyang and Xiao Heng. Whenever they were in an unfamiliar place, he would always keep watch as they rested.

He must have been utterly exhausted from the journey as his breathing was noticeably heavier than usual.

Xiao Heng quietly sat up, then just as quietly reached out a single finger to lift the edge of the mosquito net.

Long Yi shifted slightly.

"I'm just going to the latrine." Xiao Heng whispered.

Long Yi had traveled nonstop without getting a full night's sleep and had even fought a battle against An Hun. In truth, he was already utterly exhausted.

As long as there was no threatening presence approaching, he wouldn’t wake up.

Xiao Heng tiptoed out of the room, and just as he reached the door, he spotted Gu Jiao standing in the corridor across from him.

He quickly walked over.

Gu Jiao looked at him in surprise. "I thought you were asleep."

Xiao Heng lowered his voice. "No, I was waiting for you. Let’s talk inside; we shouldn’t wake Long Yi."

Gu Jiao let out a soft "hmm" and asked, "Long Yi is asleep?"

Xiao Heng nodded. "Mm. He’s completely worn out. I’ve never seen him this exhausted before."

Gu Jiao glanced back at the tightly closed door across from her before pushing open Xiao Heng’s door and stepping inside with him.

"Gu Chengfeng and the Emperor have arrived, haven’t they?" Gu Jiao took out a flame stick and lit an oil lamp.

"They have. They’ve both gone to sleep." Xiao Heng replied. He walked over to the table, poured a cup of cool tea, and handed it to Gu Jiao. "Have some water first."

Gu Jiao was indeed very thirsty. She took the cup and gulped down three large cups in a row.

Xiao Heng watched her with a touch of concern. "Are you hurt anywhere?"

"They arrived just in time, so I didn’t get injured." She said. Her foot was no longer a problem.

"What happened with Gu Changqing?" Xiao Heng asked.

Gu Jiao recounted the whole mess caused by the Imperial Advisor, where the supposed ‘becoming a death warrior’ turned out to be a misunderstanding.

By the time she finished, Xiao Heng was at a complete loss for words.

Seriously? Something like this could actually happen?

Now he was really looking forward to the day Gu Changqing found out the truth.

Would he end up killing his foolish past self, or would he just get rid of that grandiose trickster, the Imperial Advisor?

Gu Jiao pondered for a moment before saying, "I have a question. Our actions were extremely covert, so how did the Imperial Advisor know we were going to the imperial palace to snatch the Emperor? Does this mean he already understands that the one sitting on the throne is a fake?"

Xiao Heng responded with a completely serious expression, "I think... maybe it's because his magical powers are boundless, and he divined it through some mystical means."

Gu Jiao narrowed her eyes slightly. "So it was you."

Xiao Heng immediately denied it. "It wasn’t me!"

Gu Jiao: Heh.

Xiao Heng quickly peeled a tangerine and handed it to Gu Jiao. "Here, have a tangerine! Just eat the tangerine!"

Gu Jiao took the tangerine, giving him a look that clearly said, I see right through you.

Xiao Heng smiled faintly. "By the way, how did you run into Long Yi?"

"It just happened." Gu Jiao said, summarizing the situation in a few concise sentences—how Long Yi arrived just in time and gave An Hun a brutal beating. She then highlighted three key points.

First, Long Yi was indeed Shi Tian. This was now confirmed beyond doubt.

Second, Long Yi and An Hun were old acquaintances. Unfortunately, Long Yi had lost his memory and no longer recalled anything from the past.

And third, Long Yi might actually be capable of speech.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
