Regarding the third point, Xiao Heng had no doubts at all. After all, aside from the late Emperor of the State of Zhao, no one else would train their own death warriors to be completely incapable of communication.
"As for the second point, I can answer that for you," Xiao Heng said. "Shi Tian and An Hun were fellow disciples from the same sect, and Shi Tian was the exceptionally talented junior disciple."
Gu Jiao suddenly understood. "So that's the connection between them! No wonder An Hun spoke to Long Yi in that way… But where did you hear all this from?"
Xiao Heng thought for a moment. In the end, his strong survival instincts prevailed. "The Imperial Advisor."
Gu Jiao was suddenly bewildered.
Since when had the two of them gotten so close? The Imperial Advisor even shared information that couldn’t be found in the library pavilion?
Xiao Heng cleared his throat lightly. "It was Xiao Qing. The Imperial Advisor and Xiao Qing have a rather good relationship."
He had simply benefited from Xiao Qing’s connections.
"Speaking of which, Xiao Qing has been traveling for so long. Isn’t your mother worried?"
Xiao Heng smiled. "He started roaming the martial world with his guards when he was just six years old. He won’t suffer any losses out there."
Gu Jiao asked, "What were you doing when you were six?"
Xiao Heng spread his hands. "I was kept by my mother’s side at all times, not allowed to take a single step away from her. Every day was either spent memorizing poetry or practicing calligraphy."
Gu Jiao rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "The two of them really had completely different ways of raising a child. So, do you ever envy Xiao Qing?"
Would he wish to be like Xiao Qing, free from being forced to study, free from being forced to practice calligraphy, and instead spending every day carefree and unrestrained?
"No." Xiao Heng answered.
"Why not?" Gu Jiao asked.
Xiao Heng gently took her soft hand in his, gazing deeply into her eyes. "Because if I had grown up in the State of Yan, I never would have met you."
……
Cold palace.
Covered in blood, An Hun staggered back to the eastern courtyard.
Han shi stepped out of her room, and upon seeing his condition, she was startled. "What happened to you? Where is His Majesty?"
An Hun spoke in an indifferent tone. "He was taken away."
Han shi frowned and said, "Didn’t I tell you to bring him back?"
An Hun’s expression darkened even further. "Do you think I let them go on purpose?"
Han shi was momentarily at a loss for words.
An Hun was her advisor, not her servant. She should indeed treat him with proper respect.
Adjusting her tone, she said, "Your injuries are severe. I’ll have someone summon an imperial physician for you."
Now that her attitude had softened, An Hun’s own response was naturally less sharp.
He waved a hand dismissively. "No need. I can tend to my wounds myself."
Han shi asked again, "What exactly happened? Who injured you so badly?"
Instead of answering her question immediately, An Hun asked in return, "Who exactly is this Xiao Liulang?"
Han shi immediately realized something and asked, "Was tonight’s incident his doing?"
"Answer me first." An Hun responded.
Han shi furrowed her brows slightly. "He’s a Zhao native who entered Tianqiong Academy under the identity of Xiao Liulang. Now, he has become the adopted son of Duke An. As for his true identity, we have yet to uncover anything concrete."
Thinking back to what happened tonight, An Hun felt a dull pain rise in his chest again. "You’d better investigate him as soon as possible. If you can’t find anything in the State of Yan, send people to the State of Zhao to dig deeper. That boy is not ordinary."
Han shi nodded in agreement, "He is indeed unusual. He’s still so young, yet he managed to kill Nangong Li and even defeat Han Ci to seize the Black Wind Cavalry. He might be a chess piece Shangguan Yan placed in play."
An Hun let out a cold snort. "Shangguan Yan doesn’t have that kind of ability!"
"Oh? Then does this mean Xiao Liulang’s origins are far more significant? Even a princess of an upper kingdom can’t control him?"
An Hun’s voice turned icy. "It’s not about his background, it’s about my junior brother!"
Han shi seemed thoughtful. "I remember you mentioning your junior brother before. You said he was incredibly powerful, the only rival you ever had in this world. But… wasn’t he already dead?"
An Hun's gaze turned dark and menacing. "I thought so too. But tonight, I saw him with my own eyes. He was right there, together with Xiao Liulang!"
"So he’s the one who inflicted these severe wounds on you?" Han shi was utterly shocked, finding it almost impossible to believe. In fact, a subtle sense of disappointment rose within her.
She had always thought that An Hun was the number one martial arts expert across the six states.
An Hun shot Han shi a sidelong glance and let out a cold snort. "I was careless this time and underestimated him. But next time, I will personally kill him!"
Junior brother, oh junior brother... do you even remember that the reason you went to the State ofZhao back then was because of a mission?
Not only did you fail to complete your mission, but you even forgot who you are!
Since that’s the case, don’t blame me for cleaning up the house on behalf of our master!
……
After an extraordinarily long and exhausting night, the last person still awake in Maple Courtyard finally succumbed to sleep.
The crescent moon emerged from behind the clouds, shining in harmony with the countless stars.
The scorching summer was gradually coming to an end, and even the once-deafening cries of cicadas had softened considerably.
That night, everyone slept deeply.
The next day, as the eastern sky faintly brightened with the first light of dawn, the slumbering Shengdu slowly awakened in the soft morning glow.
The people of Maple Courtyard began their daily routine.
The first to wake up was Little Jing Kong.
Lately, he had been stuck by that bad brother-in-law’s side as a little tagalong, unable to openly move in and live with Gu Jiao.
Because of this, every morning, he made sure to express his strong dissatisfaction by throwing a fit upon waking up.
But this morning, when he opened his eyes, he found himself lying on an unfamiliar little bed.
Huh?
He quickly sat up, jumped off the bed, and pushed open the door to take a look outside.
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
It was the courtyard of the Duke Estate!
He had slept at the Duke Estate last night!
He was with JiaoJiao!
"Jiao—mmph—"
The little guy dashed excitedly toward Gu Jiao’s room, but just before he could charge inside, a tall figure swooped in and scooped him up in one swift motion.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
