The impact and shock brought by this scene were utterly overwhelming. The dense, black mass of the Black Wind Cavalry surged forward like a torrent of scalding molten iron, charging straight toward the eighty thousand rebellious troops of the Nangong Family!

In large-scale battles, armies typically form strategic formations; archers and war chariots were deployed at the front, followed by cavalry leading the charge into enemy lines, with infantry providing support from the rear.

Chang Wei had designated the area near the canyon as the main battlefield, so naturally, the Nangong Family's cavalry and war chariots had been positioned in that direction.

By the original plan, as long as the Black Wind Cavalry encountered the snow silkworm threads, there would be no need for his own forces to engage at all.

The problem, however, was that he wasn’t entirely confident the deputy general would successfully lure the Black Wind Cavalry over.

If the deputy general and his squad of cavalry had been wiped out in the canyon before achieving their objective, and the Black Wind Cavalry instead advanced directly into the canyon to attack, then the snow silkworm thread would be rendered useless.

To prepare for such an outcome, he had still designated this area as the primary battlefield.

This arrangement, in effect, was like throwing open the gates to welcome the Black Wind Cavalry, an open invitation for them to harvest lives at will.

Cavalry and infantry were not on the same tier in terms of combat strength to begin with, let alone when facing the most powerful cavalry unit, the Black Wind Cavalry, among all six states!

Chang Wei didn’t even need to look to know just how heavy the casualties on his side would be.

With a cold glare, Chang Wei turned to the deputy general beside him. “When you engaged with them, didn’t you notice that they didn’t have many troops?!”

“I…” The deputy general choked on his words.

Inside the canyon, he had been so thoroughly overwhelmed by the sheer momentum of the Black Wind Cavalry that he had completely lost his composure. Terrified out of his wits, all he could think about was escaping as soon as possible, fearing that even a moment longer might cost him his life. How could he have possibly spared the presence of mind to count how many troops the enemy actually had?

He flung out his arm and pointed toward the quiet, sloping hillside. “It was their commanding officer! He was shouting like mad! He made my head buzz!”

That, too, had indeed been a factor.

Cheng Fugui, through sheer vocal force alone, had shouted with the intensity of ten thousand men, managing to create the terrifying illusion that the entirety of the Black Wind Cavalry was stationed right behind him.

Chang Wei gritted his teeth and snapped, “You didn’t even see the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry, so how could you conclude that all of the Black Wind Cavalry was there?!”

“I… I…”

He had been completely dumbfounded by Cheng Fugui’s shouting, all right?

At this point, it would be willful blindness for Chang Wei to deny he had fallen for a trick.

The ambush in the canyon had been nothing more than a decoy. In truth, the main force of the Black Wind Cavalry had long since looped around to the rear of the Nangong Army.

That commanding officer’s loud shouting and cursing had all been a deliberate ruse to draw their attention, to keep them from noticing the silent approach of the main Black Wind Cavalry force from the other side.

But how had they even come up with the idea to circle around to strike from the rear?

Weren’t they afraid the Black Wind Cavalry force in the canyon would be swallowed whole by the Nangong Family’s army?

Unless——

The Black Wind Cavalry had known all along that they wouldn’t be able to get through!

Chang Wei looked toward the faintly visible snow silkworm thread stretched out ahead, then at the Black Wind cavalrymen who had suddenly stopped advancing and were now hiding behind the hill. A wild conjecture suddenly surfaced in his heart.

That youth had predicted he would use this tactic!

But how could that be possible?

Not even the Nangong Family head knew about the snow silkworm thread in his possession——

Just who was that youth, and how could he possibly know him so well?

There was no time to ponder it further. Behind him, screams of agony rang out again and again as the Black Wind Cavalry slaughtered soldiers as effortlessly as reaching into a sack. If this continued, the army would be utterly defeated!

“Get someone to dismantle the snow silkworm thread!” He ordered the deputy general.

But this contraption wasn’t so easy to take down. It was impervious to fire and blades, and to prevent slippage, it had been secured with death knots!

Even the wooden pillars were custom-made!

If anything embodied the phrase “drawing a prison with lines,” this was it.

Chang Wei’s head throbbed in frustration!

All he could do was order the deputy general to find a way to dismantle it. As for himself, he had thought about circling around from both sides to kill off those Black Wind cavalrymen hiding behind the hill, but he just had to choose such a perfect spot for an ambush… both sides were flanked by lakes!

How was he supposed to circle around like that?

Diving underground?

Chang Wei suppressed the waves of dizziness that surged over him and coldly drew his longsword.

“All cavalry, hear my command! Ride with me into battle!”

“Prepare the war chariots! Archers, follow close behind!”

War chariots paired with archers were an effective method to counter cavalry, but the problem was that chariots moved too slowly. He would have to engage the Black Wind Cavalry in close combat first.

At the head of the charge, Chang Wei led the Nangong Family’s cavalry as they weaved through the formations of infantry.

The Nangong Army was by no means weak. They had always trained following the methods passed down from the Xuanyuan Family. However, this advantage turned into a glaring weakness the moment they encountered the true forces of the Xuanyuan Army, leaving them utterly vulnerable and exposed.

The might of the Xuanyuan Army was etched deep into their very bones. When the soaring eagle banner fluttered proudly in the wind, the surge of heat that washed over one’s chest was enough to scorch even the internal organs.

Chang Wei’s presence helped the Nangong Family regain some semblance of direction and morale. Under his command, the scattered troops slowly began to regroup and recover their fighting spirit.

But even this renewed effort could not withstand the relentless slaughter of the Black Wind Cavalry. Unstoppable and merciless, the Black Wind Cavalry swept across the battlefield like beasts from the abyss, like demonic reapers from purgatory; no rebel could escape the blade in their hands.

Chang Wei’s eyes were bloodshot as he watched his soldiers fall one by one, his fury burning red-hot!

Elsewhere, the deputy general was leading several soldiers in an attempt to dismantle the snow silkworm thread, but conventional weapons were useless; one strike, and the blade broke in two.

Fire had no effect either.

He tried chopping at the wooden pillars, only to find them harder than iron. His sword’s edge was chipped, and the pillars didn’t budge an inch!

Finally, a flash of inspiration struck the deputy general. “Dig! Dig the pillars out of the ground for me!”

Whoosh!

An arrow whistled through the air and struck a Nangong soldier squarely, sending him crashing to the ground!

The deputy general’s eyes trembled, and he whipped his head around to see Cheng Fugui, Li Jin, and Tong Zhong leading a large squad of cavalry, firing arrows at them with unrelenting precision.

Anyone who came near the pillars, they’d shoot one. Two approached, they’d shoot two. It didn’t matter how many came, each one was met with an arrow!

The deputy general snatched up a shield to protect himself, gritting his teeth in rage. “They think we don’t have any archers, huh?!”

Damn it!

They really didn’t!

General Chang Wei had taken them all!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
