The situation on the battlefield could change in the blink of an eye, even the slightest oversight could lead to consequences beyond redemption.
This wasn’t to say that Chang Wei lacked the ability to oversee the entire battlefield, but rather, it was Gu Jiao’s appearance that introduced the most unpredictable variable in this entire war.
Chang Wei had encountered countless people in his life, yet never had he crossed swords with an enemy like this before. The other party seemed to understand his every move, while he knew absolutely nothing about them.
He had thought the other party was merely a martial prodigy, never expecting the youth to also possess the genius and intuition of a master tactician!
Chang Wei’s eyes burned red as he stared at the youth who had already cut down so many Nangong soldiers. The youth fought with such ferocity that no one dared approach her. But if she locked onto someone, none had managed to escape her pursuit.
Chang Wei led his cavalry in an encirclement to take down Gu Jiao.
Seeing the wave of cavalry charging toward her, Gu Jiao showed not even a trace of fear in her eyes. One hand gripped the reins, the other clutched the red-tasseled spear. Her gaze brimmed with killing intent as she shouted, “Charge!”
The Black Wind King’s presence exploded forth as it surged ahead, barreling into the Nangong cavalry formation with unrelenting dominance.
The warhorses of the Nangong Family were so terrified by the Black Wind King that they scattered in every direction. The hard-won cavalry formation was instantly torn apart, scattered like sand.
Gu Jiao and the Black Wind King gave chase to the prey that belonged to them.
But this was not the most terrifying part.
Several times, Chang Wei had tried to kill Gu Jiao, only to be desperately intercepted by the Black Wind Cavalry. It was then he noticed something shocking.
These Black Wind cavalrymen, though they appeared to be fighting individually, were in fact working in concert; they were organized, strategic, and deliberate. They were herding the entire Nangong Army toward the canyon.
They formed a surrounding net around the Nangong forces, pushing these panic-stricken soldiers into a dead end with no way out, leaving them with no option but to flee backward.
And the result of that retreat was——
Chang Wei abruptly turned his head, staring in horror at the Nangong soldiers recklessly charging ahead. “Stop—everyone, stop right now——!”
But it was already too late.
The unsuspecting rebel soldiers surged forward in unison, slamming straight into the snow silkworm thread——
That trap had been meant for the Black Wind Cavalry!
Why… why did it have to fall upon his own men in the end!
Chang Wei let out a roar of grief and fury, wild and guttural like a wounded beast!
Gu Jiao raised her spear and brought it down in a swift motion, killing a rebel soldier who had attempted a sneak attack on the Black Wind King!
Though the situation on the surface appeared to be overwhelmingly in their favor, in truth, only she understood the reality behind the frontlines.
Everyone’s physical strength was nearing its absolute limit. Even though it wasn’t outwardly obvious, if the fighting continued, the casualties among the Black Wind Cavalry would rise dramatically.
Gu Jiao pulled tightly on the reins. “Big Boss!”
Understanding her instantly, the Black Wind King adjusted its direction in sync with Gu Jiao’s pull and galloped straight toward General Chang Wei.
Its strength, too, was almost spent.
After so many days of forced marching, the exhaustion had caught up not only with the people, but with the horses as well.
Every single member of the Black Wind Cavalry was fighting with everything they had, disregarding life or death, even enduring internal injuries just to keep pushing forward.
At the edge of the battlefield, some among them had already collapsed, coughing up blood.
—completely worn out, to the point of collapse from sheer overexertion.
Chang Wei brought his sword down on one of the Black Wind Cavalry’s warhorses, but Gu Jiao lifted her spear and intercepted it with a metallic clash, deflecting the powerful blow.
Chang Wei turned his head sharply and locked eyes with the cold, composed gaze of the young warrior.
In a calm voice, the youth said, “Your opponent… is me.”
Chang Wei feinted with a deceptive move, then suddenly thrust his sword toward Gu Jiao’s heart!
It was a strike that bordered on a sneak attack.
To use such a low move on someone so much younger…honestly, he felt ashamed.
But the situation had grown so dire that if he couldn’t swiftly take the head of the Black Wind Cavalry’s commander, the Nangong forces would truly lose this battle!
Gu Jiao was struck by his sword.
A flash of elation lit up Chang Wei’s eyes!
He knew, there was no way anyone could dodge that move!
But in the very next moment, his expression froze.
Why… why hadn’t it pierced through?
Even Fifth Master Han’s treasured sword couldn’t pierce my, what makes you think your blade… is sharper than his?
Gu Jiao looked at him with steady calm, and under his stunned gaze, she raised her red-tasseled spear. With one powerful thrust, she drove it straight through his hardened armor, plunging it into his chest——
“General Chang Wei!”
A Nangong rebel soldier, who had just witnessed the scene, cried out in shock and horror.
The Black Wind cavalrymen seized the opportunity to shout with all their might.
“General Chang Wei is dead!”
“General Chang Wei has been slain by the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry!”
“Brothers! Their undefeated general has fallen at the hands of our young commander! Charge! Kill these traitorous rebels!”
The morale of the Black Wind Cavalry continued to soar. Though each and every one of them was teetering on the brink of collapse from exhaustion, they gritted their teeth and held firm, refusing to let the Nangong rebels detect even the slightest trace of fatigue.
The Nangong rebel soldiers nearby had seen General Chang Wei’s assassination with their own eyes, and even those stationed further away who couldn’t see clearly didn’t need to, as Gu Jiao had already lifted the man’s impaled body high with a single strike of his spear, suspending him in mid-air for all to see.
“This is your General Chang Wei! He has fallen by my hand!”
The youthful voice, though still tinged with inexperience, rang with cold, deadly resolve, echoing fiercely across the thunderous chaos of the battlefield.
General Chang Wei had never known defeat, yet now he had been brought down by a mere novice youth!
The youth’s battle armor shimmered under the silver light of the moon.
In that moment, all who saw him were struck with a sudden, dizzying sense of deja vu—it was as if, after the legendary Xuanyuan Li, a new war god had been born!
The Nangong rebels had already been demoralized, and the death of General Chang Wei became the final straw that broke the camel’s back.
Ahead of them stood the iron cavalry of Xuanyuan Army with raised butcher's blades; behind them loomed the invisible, deadly walls made of snow silkworm threads. Soldiers were gripped with terror, and some, in their panic, leapt into the lake in an attempt to escape.
But before they could even swim away, arrows from Cheng Fugui and the others tore through the air like spirits seeking souls. In just a few breaths' time, the surface of the lake was dyed crimson with spreading waves of blood.
The vast battlefield had now completely transformed into a slaughterhouse ruled by the Black Wind Cavalry. Every Nangong rebel soldier had become a helpless lamb awaiting slaughter. Even worse, they were now without a leader, their morale had plummeted, and they had long since lost the will to resist.
All they could do was wait for death in despair.
“Brothers! If we must die, let’s take a few of them down with us! Let the Black Wind Cavalry join us in death!”
There were still those with courage left.
But Gu Jiao would not give them the chance to drag the Black Wind Cavalry down with them.
Gu Jiao shouted sternly, “Surrender, and you will not be killed! But if anyone dares to resist to the end, kill them without mercy!”
These words, spoken in the depths of their hopelessness, offered the rebels a single, fragile path to survival.
One man dropped his weapon.
Then a second followed.
Soon after, a third surrendered as well.
Faced with a choice between surrender and death, who would willingly choose to die?
Gu Jiao ordered the cavalry beside him, “Seize their war chariots!”
The night was far from over.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
